Scaring the pants off an adult . . .

David Griggs-Janower writes about auditioning:
Nothing quite scares the pants off an adult like a vocal audition, especially if someone hasn't auditioned in the last decade or more. It's an awful process for the auditionee. You don't have an instrument to hide behind, you can't blame a bad sound on that loose reed or out of tune string. It's just you, singing to me, with that instrument that's so completely part of our body, and, by extension, of who we are.
