550 audition for papal choir

Quite a crowd auditioned for the papal choir that will sing for the Pope's visit in April:

About 550 singers auditioned for the 250-singer Papal Mass Choir, which will be directed by Tom Stehle, the pastoral associate for liturgy and music at Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac. Auditions were held for four days at seven different sites in the archdiocese.

The choir will lead the estimated 45,000 people assembled at Nationals Park for Pope Benedict XVI's Mass on April 17.

Auditioners had to sing "All Creatures of our God and King." Then they were tested on range and sight singing abilities. The singers accepted into the choir will be required to attend seven rehearsals starting March 10, each lasting about two and one-half hours. The choir will learn 50 pieces. While the Mass on April 17 begins at 10 a.m. the prelude music will begin at 8:30 when the processional starts.
