A couple times in my life I've had occasion to direct a beer-bottle orchestra, but the Melbourne Symphony and Orchestra Victoria has left me completely in the dust. They do use real timpani, though (played by dropping empty bottles on them).
Tuning the bottles is a dreary, time-consuming experience, however. I usually started with empty bottles and filled them with water to various levels, but it took forever, and you got light-headed from constantly blowing on them.

I'd imagine you'd also get light-headed from emptying them in the first place ...
