Researchers in California studying perfect pitch have discovered that the note most likely to be misidentified is G sharp, according to an article in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
Their theory is that orchestras, which tune to A, have a notoriously wide tuning range, from 446Hz in the Berlin Philharmonic to 415Hz for early-music groups. This explanation strikes me as bunk, but I don't have a better one.
