National Lutheran Choir Wins Margaret Hillis Award

In the "it's never too late to talk about great things" category, I submit this recent recognition of the National Lutheran Choir at the June 2007 Chorus America Convention.

Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence

The National Lutheran Choir from Minneapolis was awarded the 2007 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence. Director David Cherwien was present to accept the award. The award honors the memory of Margaret Hillis, founder of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, for her more than 40 years of professional achievement and outstanding contributions to the choral arts.

The $5,000 award is presented annually to a member chorus that demonstrates artistic excellence, a strong organizational structure, and a commitment to outreach, education, and/or culturally diverse activities. The National Lutheran Choir recently celebrated its 20th anniversary season with special concerts, events, and awards.

Founded in 1986 by Larry Fleming, the 60-voice Choir performs sacred choral music ranging from early chant to new compositions and from simple folk anthems to complex orchestral masterworks. The ensemble presents a wide range of choral works in concert and worship settings, leads choral workshops, commissions and publishes new compositions, and broadcasts and records extensively.
